Separation polyethylene glycol

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Dear All

Why there is no separation for the polyethylene glycol (PEG) in GC? Is that due to the high molecular weight itself? Is any method can use to separate it?

Thanks & Regards
Pang

If it's a small enough PEG, one can obtain GC separation readily. We make trimethylsilyl derivatives here, use nonpolar capillaries.

Flash chromatography and thin layer chromatography can separate a molecular weight distribution of PEG. If the MW is too high it is not volatile enough to elute from a GLC column or the temperatures required are too high.

best wishes,

Rodney George
