7890 TCD - FID in series

My lab is experimenting with running our TCD and FID in series. We have been running samples but both our TCD and FID sensitivity have dropped. TCD almost right away and then the FID. I disconnected the TCD and hooked the cap. Column directly to the FID and the sensitivity came back to normal levels. What I would like to do is rig up the Agilent in series kit but I need an FID cap column to packed column fitting. Is there such a beast?

There is no official Agilent part to do this.

There is such a kit from Agilent. You should ask Agilent vendor in your area for that.

Just to clarify this.

Agilent supplies a kit to enable a FID and TCD to be connected in series. The FID used MUST be the FID that can be used with packed columns. You can not connect to the FID that will only allow capillary columns to be connected to it.

And to add further to my above posting.

I understood from the original posting that mmmount is looking for a part that enables the user to connect a packed column to an FID that is for capillary use only. There is no official part from Agilent to do this.

Apparently, Agilent has just come up with a more formal process for putting two detectors in series.

Check out Publicationa Number G31383-90120.

Thank you all for your input!

mmmount.

Do you mean G3183-90120?

"Do you mean G3183-90120?"

Sorry for not getting back sooner. Yes I did mean G3183-90120.

Thanks

Thanks for getting back.

The document that you refer to is not about connecting a TCD and FID in series, but splitting the output of a column to two or more detectors. This would not put the detectors in series, but in parallel. You would thus get a drop in sensitivity, depending on the split ratio to the detectors.

mmmount,

Capillary column or packed column?

I would expect the output of the FID to be noisy due to the switching process of the TCD disturbing the flow to the FID jet. It might not be that significant if you are using a packed jet with the high flows you are going to have but....

I would also suggest (of course) that if you are having trouble with TCD sensitivity you switch to HID with my well know bias for this solution.... Then you could run parallel columns (split at the front from one injector) and get plenty of sensitivity and not have to worry about flow perturbation. Been there, done that, works great.

Best regards.

Hello,

Sorry to resurrect on old post. Can anyone tell me if the Three-Way Splitter Kit from Agilent will work with a 5890 II as well?

Thanks
