Resolution calculation

Dear all,

I know two equations for calculation of resolution:

- one considering retention time differences and peak widths
- one considering N, k and alpha

Does anybody know a site or article where the algebraic transfer from one into the other equation is performed/explained (step by step) considering additional equations such as k = (tR-t0)/t0 or similar?

Thank you so much

Florian

It's a nice question.
I have substituted the equation R = 1/4 *SQRT(N)*(k/k+1)*(alpha-1)alpha with the following:

N = 16(tR/Wb)^2

k = (tR-to)/to and

alpha = tR2/tR1

and it results in the other equation !

The first one is a calculated equation. This provides you the exact resolution you obtain from your chromatogram.

The second one is an approximate (theoritical) equation which shows how resolution varies as a function of other parameters you mentioned.

Thus I don't see why you would mathematically switch from one to the other.
