what happen if length of alkyl chain decrease

if I decrease alkyl chain from C18 all the way to C1 chain, what will happen to the analyte retention time?
I know hydrophobic analyte will decrease, but how about hydrophilic analyte, will them increase?
will them like C1 column become normal phase column if we still use MEOH/H2O.
