Paging Skunked Once (ECD-transfer-related)

Be sure to discuss the implications of switching the radioactive source from one instrument to another with your radiation safety officer or equivalent. There may be no issues but you want to be sure!
skunked_once, you mentioned this in one of my previous posts. I was wondering though:
I'm in the process of buying a used (inactive) 5890 with dual ECDs from another lab. They said I'm more than welcome to take it to my lab and hook it up to see if it's operable.
Can I just pick it up from there and bring it down to my place? Or do I have to fill out some kind of paperwork for radioactive source transfer?

You should check on what your local state regulations say.
Are you moving the unit from a lab in the same facility or from one facility to another?
Do you already have ECD units in your lab? if so what routine safeguards do you have in place.
Usually with radioactive sources, a company will have an identified responsible person who should be able to advise you .

Yes, I have 3 ECDs in my lab. Routine safeguards include chemical traps, venting to hoods, and wipe tests every six months.

If I were in your shoes (and I have done this before), I would remove the ECDs from the instrument, package them in zip locks and put them in a stout, sealed cardboard box and then label them as sealed radioactive sources. You can probably get the more appropriate labeling requirements off the web but the sturdy cardboard box should meet the US transportation requirements from my experience. If you want to double check this, call either of the two companies that cleans sources, their information is here on the forum.

Since you already have ECDs in your lab and are doing the required swipe tests, you should talk with the person that is in charge of the radioisotopes for your location. At the minimum, I believe that there will be a requirement to document the transfer of the ECDs from one physical location to another. Thanks to the others who posted responses also.
