Shrill/High-pitched noise coming from degasser

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

About a week ago, the degasser on our Agilent 1100 system started making this really shrill noise when going on (I mean, it always produced a noise, but never like this - it's pretty much unbearable at the moment!). Any idea what could be causing it? We primed all the channels manually with isopropanol, followed by their respective solvents...

Thank you,

Roxanne

Power off the instrument, the pump, the degasser, then re-power it back on. System likely needs to be re-set.

No, that didn't do it.

I had someone take a look this morning and it would appear that the vacuum pump is slowly heading towards failure. :/

We'll drive it until it's gone.

Well that sounds like my old used car, the mechanic said that the tranny will eventually go out--but it keeps on working (though grudgingly at at times) but since it is paid for --I'll drive it into the ground--do the same for your LC pump. Hopefully you can purch a new pump/degasser unit or find one inexpensively soon.

The vacuum pump for the 1100-series degassers is part # G1322-60000, and it's $571 on the Agilent site. Alternatively (and since testing an Agilent degasser is a pain in the @$$), you could opt for the Agilent bench repair service for about $1700 (if I remember correctly) if you're not certain of the exact part in the degasser that failed. It beats buying all the innards and gutting it, pricewise, but not time-wise - normally takes a week-and-a-half to 2 weeks to ship it to them and get it back from them.

Here's the parts overview for the G1322 degasser - the pump is the same for the G1379.
