How to backwash a column (flash column)?

Hi,

I have just bought some Amberlite XAD-2 (polystyrene adsorbent resin) and some Dowex Marathon WBA (anionic ion exchange resin) to use in the purification of a compound.
In the manual they tell me to backwash the column for a certain amount of time. I understand that I have to introduce a flow of water to the end of the column, but I don't really know how to do it. Should I use some kind of a pump?
We have a water pump in the lab, but the slowest setting is way to fast to use for my column.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Best regards,
Emil

Hang a large separatory funnel above the level of your column, with a tygon tube running from the outlet of the funnel to the outlet of your column. You can adjust the flow rate by adjusting the height of the funnel relative to the top of the column.
