Broken Jet in FID

OK, not sure how this happened but the jet snapped in the FID weldment. Basically it snapped half way down the thread and despite many a good effort we are unable to remove it.

We even tried drilling it in order to tap it so we could try and unscrew it, but that just borke the drill bit.

IS there some magic method that we haven't discovered to get it out, or do we have to replace the weldment?

Hi

Tried to acess it from beneath? a narrow flat nosed plier/pincer might reach the part of the jet where the column goes in.

First time I heard anyone managed to snap a jet, overtightened?

What make of GC is it ?

If the jet is metal (e.g. Agilent) your only chance is an Easy Out screw remover, but I suspect that jamming a drill bit into it has tightened it beyond all recovery.

If the jet is ceramic (e.g. Varian) it is not screwed in at all, and you might be able to poke it out from underneath.

Before you broke the drill bit (still in there?) I would've suggested using a left-handed drill bit, and the reverse setting on the drill, and I'm not joking here. Those left-hand bits can be hard to find, but can provide grab in the direction you want the broken jet to turn.

I had to buy my left-hand bits through the Internet, but I did notice that some Ace Hardware stores in my area (U.S.) actually stock some individually.

Not to sound arrogant, buy what is your time worth? You already have a couple of hours in and you have not been successful yet (kudos for the initiative.) Buy a new base from Restek for $525 US, PN 23041. Or buy a used base from any number of second hand parts vendors for something less.

Best regards.

Yup Had to buy a new one......was just trying to get system up and running quicker, as we have a bit of a backlog anyway, without this happening.

It is an agilent system,
