Choosing between GC vs LC for a sample analysis

What would you say were the drivers in the decision-making tree, aside from these:
1) can the analyte be volatilised?
2) can it be dissolved in organic solv or approp. mobile phase?
3) others?
I know that this is a fundamental question, but assessing the relevancy here.

Thanks, JS

One of my first questions has been: What instrument is available. If the GC is free and the LC is tied up... We look at GC.

What limits of detection do we need and can the compound be reasonably detected on the instrument?

Cost of sample prep. and instrument operation. Can we shake and shoot or do we have to go through concentration steps, solvent exchanges, SPE cartriges, etc.

What combination of separation and selectivity do you need to get a clean signal for the analyte ?
