Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (tph)

Hey all,

Im currently trying to determine tph in waste water by GC. I have an FID csi 200 model and was just wondering what would be the best mehod to determine this? keep in mind that Im a relative novice with regards to GC's. Any thoughts or help on this would be much appreciated!

Solvent extraction with pentane or DCM, in a VOA vial or a volumetric flask (depending on which solvent), dry with a little sodium sulfate (or not), put extract in vial. Shoot 1 uL or so, split or splitless depending on how low you need to go with a 30 meter DB-5 type column to the FID. I would add an extraction surrogate as well. Calibration curve standards are available from a number of sources, Restek, Supelco, Accustandard, etc....

Web search Texas 1005 or Washington state TPH methods and you should be able to get quite a bit more information on TPH methods.

Hi, for my sins I've also been asked to start testing for PCB's in used oil, I also have a csi 200 ecd with a pesticide column, as mentioned earlier I'm a novice with these two new machines FID and ECD.

Can anyone give any pointers on setting up this pesticide column for testing for PCB's

Hi ChrisM,
for pcb's u might want to look at USEPA 8082. am sure it will suit ur need, as for GC settings and columns, you can call phenomenex or the likes of sigma aldrich, they will be more than happy to point u in the direction of columns, i think there are dedicated standards and columns for the USEPA methods. i am currently putting together methods too so if you get stuck let me know.
