NMR

For NMR, what are the potential negative effects of being close to it when it is operating and generating a strong magnetic field?

Also, are NMRs mostly in the form of a desktop instrument or a big drum type apparatus
Don't magnetic fields fall off very quickly with distance? Inverse cubed or something?
Most of the newer ones are very well shielded so the 5 Gauss line is only a few inches from it. That is for the high field (~500 MHz). The desktop ones I am not too familiar with but they don't require cryogens.
