Nitric oxide on GC

Hi all,

I have a researcher colleague that is interested in analyses of nitric oxide NO in N2, at levels of 1-10 ppm. We have a Thermo Trace 1310 with a PDD detector. I understand that NO and NO2 are reactive and therefore difficult. Using my MSieve 5A column I didnt find any peak that could be identified as NO. Can NO be analysed on GC in a simple way using any other column? Or is a GC simply not the right instrument for this task?

Yes, NO is doable by GC. There is a paper in ISA by Dr. Jerry Clemons and myself that describes the analysis at sub-ppm levels, balance hydrogen. Uses a porous polymer and an argon ionization detector that I developed and which ABB and I sell (slightly different versions between us.) Takes a few runs of standard to equilibrate the system but after that get good peak shape and reproducibility.
