I have a reference standard that has to be stored under inert conditions. Can anyone give example of how they deal with this in their labs.

It will depend a lot on what the standard is and what it could react with.
Is it sensitive to oxygen, or light, or does it react with certain solvents or adhere to glass or plastic?
Inert for one compound may not be inert for another.

Do what the manufacturer states, find out the specifics.
If the manufacturer stated stand on one foot while opening the freezer door, my pointy-haired boss would make us do that (and likely ask the manufacturer which foot).

use a septum sample bottle, an argon balloon with a needle and a syringe/needle to put or retrieve the standard
keep in dark and cold place (fridge ?)
