Hi I would like to figure out the purity and components of crude glycerin. The crude glycerin I am working with has been acidulated with sulfuric acid. It has been separated into 2 phases. The lower phase is im guessing around 80% pure glycerin with most of the sulfuric acid left in, it is very acidic. The pH is around 1. The upper phase (mong or acid oil) is a mix of free fatty acids, FAME, and mono,di,tri glycerides, and other impurities.
I have an HP5890, on column injection, FID, with a 15m agilent db5HT and guard column.
What i want to determine is what impurities are left in the glycerin or what % of glycerin there is, and what are the percentages of FFA's, FAMEs, and glycerides left in the upper phase.

So, I guess I need to know what kind of sample prep i should be doing on the glycerin, is it too acidic to run on my column? If i neutralize it will the salts affect the column? What kind of solvent should I use, obviously i can't use water with the glycerin. Ive been running ASTM 6584 im thinking that would be the template i should use...
