LC and GC columns

why is a LC column length so short compared to a GC's?

The short, oversimplified answer is because liquids are four orders of magnitude denser than gases, and diffusivity in liquids is four orders of magnitude lower.

It's math-intensive, but the classic is Giddings' book "Dynamics of Chromatography"

You can pick up used copies relatively inexpensively (in the US, at least). Here's the link to Amazon:
