This HP 5890 was working fine until I turned off all the heated zones. I wanted to put a thermal cover over the ECD.

Went to lunch, came back, and saw this:

Blank display, all lights lit up - there was no power surge or anything.

Please don't tell me this is another main board issue!

I restared both the software and the instrument, same result as in the picture above.

Thanks,
John

chemwipe,

Because no one else has posted. Start with this. With the GC un-plugged, remove the detector cards from the GC. Remove the heater connector (red molex.) Close up GC. Try re-starting and see what you get at that point.

Best regards.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to get a board from a dormant 5890, swapped it out, and boom, it was up and running again.

Changing out main boards is not as hard as you would think. Unscrew 8 screws and slide the board out.

I got a quote for a board and service/troubleshooting/installation for over $2000, but after working on it for a total of about 4 hours, the instrument was running samples the next day.

I kept the old board for some odd reason. Maybe I'll take a pic and post it in the Pack Rat Tendencies thread, haha!

If you do keep it I would suggest writing BAD across the front and back in big letters with a permanent marker. That may save someone from grief down the road.
