I am trying to test for potassium sorbate. Is it possible to use RID or do I have to get an UV? Any help is greatly appreciated I'm using the following column: Nucleosil 5 C18 120A.....

I've assayed potassium sorbate by GC after acidification to sorbic acid.
HPLC with low wavelength UV can be used for a lot of stuff - provided that the matrix doesn't interfere at the low wavelength.

As suggested above, use UV if only sorbate is the analyte of interest.
If you need to detect and quantify potassium
in the same analysis for any reason, you can use Acclaim Trinity P1 from Dionex (
http://www.dionex.com/en-us/webdocs/707 ... 239-01.pdf) and a Corona CAD or an ELS detector. Please contact me if you are interested.
