5890 + CombiPal setup - please help.

I am attempting to setup an old 5890 with a CombiPal autsomapler and could use some help.
1. With proper serial cable connected I can not communicate to the instrument to update firmware, etc. Can someone please provide the proper COM port settings needed to communicate to the Combipal through the PC.
2. When I start up the autosampler there are several error messages and then the system goes to the Job Queue but I can not perform any commands. I am hoping a firmware update will fix this and will allow me to then set up default object positions from the controller. Can someone please confirm that this is correct and is there anything else needed to get the instrument operational?
