I have the pleasure of a filament replacement to complete on my 5970, however the manual is MIA and the task has only been completed once in the past and so I could definitely use the reference. Does anyone out there have a copy they could send along or know a link to? I'd really appreciate the help.

Hi,
Sorry I don't have a manual :(, but there are two filaments in the MS, and the toggle switch is located on the Left hand side, underneath the vacuum gauge electronics , it is straight forward to change, just be super carefully with the vacuum gauge, and gentle with the gold screws holding the filament and source in place.

extract-o,

Try contacting third party service vendors, they might be able to help. Windy Hill (Illinois), Gentech Scientific (New York), MLS (Washington), Pace (Ohio),... Also, Scientific Instrument Services (since they sell the filaments...)

They'll probably all offer to fix it for you but they may have a manual as well.

Best regards.

extract-o,

Sorry, one other thing. You might also try e-bay.

Best regards.

thanks for your help guys, I managed to pull it off with just a whole heck of a lot of care and some common sense. thanks again.

Great. I may have a manual kicking around, I'll check. I ran a 5970 for about 20 years and the procedure for filament change is:

put the top part of the source in the stainless steel block and screw it down
install the filaments so that they are centered in the slot just behind
the filaments ( this slot is smaller than the ones in the source)
re-install the source and you should be good to go.
