Hi all,

I am trying to get Chemstation ver A10.. to communicate with my 5890 series II GC after upgrading the computer to Windows XP. We have a PCI GPIB card in the computer but only an HPIB card in the GC. Agilent thought this should work. In the configuration, there is only a option to put an address in for a GPIB card. The HPIB address doesn't seem to work. Anybody out there using this version of chemstation with the 5890? Do you need a GPIB card for the GC or did you get it to communicate with the HPIB.

Run the VISA assistant and see what/if it detects your GC and what the IP address is: usually 15 by default for the GC and 8 for an autosampler. Check the GC config, should be in the same suite of software as the VISA, and make sure that your instrument IP here is the same as in the VISA.

Cards should probably work. Some versions of chemstation have OS compatibility issues though. For example, I still run a version of MS chemstation where the enviroquant is not compatible with XP/VISTA.

I'm assuming that you have either 82341 or 82350 GPIB board in the computer. You must set that up as in the instructions, install from the HPIO Libraries. Both get set up as if they are 82341 boards. You must configure manually, type in "hp82341" no matter which of the two boards you really have installed, and set the Bus Address to 30 (whatever that means). The Configuration Editor setting for an HPIB address was for older 82335 cards for Pentium 1 and older computers, don't use that.

The GC modules get configured same as in past, through Configuration Editor, usually with the "15" and "8" defaults described earlier.

Yes, we did get it working. It actually turned out to be a problem with the cable in that it was not tight enough between the GC and computer. Once we got that straightened out, everything worked. No problems since.
