GC/MS Chemstation file analysis while traveling

Discussions about GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-FTIR, and other "coupled" analytical techniques.

I am trying to install MSD Productivity Chemstation 1701BA Rev B.02.00 on a laptop for my boss so he can look through the data while he is abroad.

Is it possible to have the software run while not connected to the GC/MS or do I need something like http://www.sisweb.com/software/csw/gcmsfile.htm?

You should be able to do something during the install with an "offline instument". Also, even if that doesn't work, you should still be able to open data analysis with no instrument attached.

For each run there are 2 files - data.ms about 1000KB and a pre_post configuation settings file 1KB.

I am unable to open them.

I install the software, reset the computer and then run MS Config as instructed. Here I am able to select offline instrument. There are 2 sections - Mass Spectrometer and Gas Chromatograpgh - were you can select your model numbers. If you select none on both sections you get error message "you must configure at least a GC or MS". If you select 1 or both you get message "MS Configuration complete. Examine ReadMeMS.txt which contains more information on your ChemStation?". I then click on GC_MS Instrument #1 Shortcut. I get message "Enhanced Chemstation Method will be updated. Edit entire method after update!" and click OK. If I then click data analysis the widow pops up but it is all greyed out and there are no menu titles on the top left where I can select file > load like on the computer connected to the GC/MS.

Are you trying to open them directly (from windows explorer), or from within Chemstation Data Analysis?

When I open data analysis on the lap top there are no menu titles at the top of the screen where you select load and then choose the file name like how it is done on the desk top connected to the GC/MS.

I just tried to use explorer to open one and now they all have the little blue E on their icon but nothing happens.

So now I choose to open with command and found the Data Analysis program but I just get the same blank grey screen with no menu titles.

I just went through the "config" utility that installs with Chemstation. I did an offline instrument with no MSD, and only a 6890. It created the icons for instrument control and data analysis. I was able to open data analysis and see a menu, and open data files.

Maybe version C works differently than version B. Sorry I can't help any more than that.
