I am trying to use an old HP GC/MS system that has been idle for quite some time. This system actually uses WIN 3.11 OS. I have the MS (5971) running fairly well (pressure, temperature, etc.) and can actually do an air/water check. However, when I load a method and try to run it I get an "INET Loop problem" message and the method fails to run. I don't see the method parameters being sent to the GC and the "not ready" light stays on. When I first turn on the GC (5890 Series II) I get a "WARN: NO DETECTORS" message on the GC control panel. I know this is a long shot but I am open to any suggestions of what might be the problem and what I might try next.

I am not sure about the Inet error, but the Warning no detector is nothing to worry about. I run 3 5890's with 5971's any time I power off the GC and power back on I get this error.

Does your 5890 have the INET board installed? This is a board on the RHS of the GC that will stick up at the top of the right hand tray and typically have a cable that loops from one connector to the other on the board. If you have broken this loop the GC will probably be looking for the next instrument in the INET loop and will not find it.

I have a second GC that has a cable connecting an in and out port at the top right of the GC. The particular GC I'm trying to operate has the in/out port but no connecting cable. I don't remember it ever having one but then again I'm an old guy. Coult it be that simple. I'll certainly try.

If it's been idle awhile, I bet someone snatched the cable. I'd see if anything else is missing =)

I took the cable from the one GC and attached it to the one I'm trying to run and the "INET loop problem" is resolved.
