Light Hydrocarbon Separation Using Packed Columns

I have an application where I wish to separate permanent gases and light hydrocarbons (through C6) on my GC 5890. The permanent gases and lights through (C2) analysis will be done on an HID using a ShinCarbon. I will use an FID with another packed column to do C2 - C6. I want to measure the C2 (ethane) from the standard gas using both detectors so that I can establish the accuracy of each and compare quantities obtained from the HID with those from the FID.

This 'other' packed column is what I need to select. Unfortunately, I was not aware when I selected ethane as my internal calibration gas for both sets of standards that it co-elutes with ethylene on most packed columns. I was considering n-octane on Res-Sil from Restek until I noticed this ugly fact.

I was curious if there are any packed columns that can resolve ethane and ethylene AND go up to C6 hydrocarbons. I guess my other option is to use methane as the internal calibration gas, for which there are no problems using Res-Sil.

If you have the capability to use capillary columns then I suggest using those for C1-C6.

A GS-CarbonPLOT should separate all your compunds alternatively GS-Alumina or GS-GasPro (all from Agilent/J&W non packed).
