Chromforum server problems?

Off-topic conversations and chit-chat.

I haven't had the problem for the past few days. Thanks for checking into it!

(I also have a *webhost guy* LMK if you want his info).

I am unhappy to report that today the "Service temporarily unavailable" message has become so frequent, that it even discourages such stubborn fools like me...

Same here... I have to update (F5) 5 times before I get anything... I think Tom will have to have another chat with the internet provider...

After several run-arounds with the Internet service provider, I got them to admit that they were "throttling" access in order to minimize the load on their server. :x

Which irritates me since we are using less than 5% of the allowed bandwidth on the account.

They have assured me that the problem has now been fixed. I'm "cautiously optimistic".

It was bad last night and is this evening as well... Perhaps it is something we said?

It is interesting and concerning at the same time that the hosting provider is effectively limiting our access to the chromforum based upon the statement we are "overloading" their capacity.

The chromforum is almost entirely text-based with very few graphical images; a few [tiny] advertising GIFs at the top with most user-content displayed by off-site services such as tinypic, imageshack, etc. When the forum does load, many of the images such as the smileys and buttons are not displayed and are replaced by text.

In addition to the lack of bandwidth consumed through browsing this resource, I am surprised that the frequency of use ("hits" or requests/sec) would slow any serious hosting provider.

Which leads me to assume they are cowboys ;) Image

I'm moving the site to another ISP this weekend. The entire site may be down for a while during the transfer.

Finally got in by being transferred to chromforum.org. (Still found my password).

Edit: Triple post :(

Edit: Triple post, see below for cause.

I have found that it is worthwhile to update bookmarks directing to chromforum.org rather than chromforum.com. While I know this makes logical sense, I found that the .COM redirect page would sometimes not load much in the way the forum previously misbehaved.

Edit: Problems were also observed in trying to post this message:

Good News... Whatever happened... All problems seem to have vanished today...

Yesterday, I moved the entire Forum over to a new hosting service; the safest way to do that was to register a new domain (www.chromforum.org). A few things got broken in the course of the move, including my ability to send mass e-mails to all the members. As soon as I get that fixed, I'll send out an "official" notification.

For now, if you try to access via the old "www.chromforum.com", your browser will be automatically redirected to the new address, but you should have fewer problems if you go directly to the new "www.chromforum.org". Once I'm sure I've gotten all the information off the old site, I'll switch the registration for the old address so that everything points directly to the same place.

For anyone who has been accessing the Forum using links to particular posts (for example: http://www.sepsci.com/chromforum/viewtopic.php?t=9878), those links will no longer work (sorry about that!) unless you edit them to point to the new domain (e.g. viewtopic.php?t=9878).

I'm sure that other glitches will show up. If you run into a problem, e-mail me at tjupille@lcresources.com.

Tom,

Thanks for all the work - on a weekend no less. I think that I can speak for many others by saying thank you.

I've noticed that some of the longer posts have been truncated in the transfer. And, if it is not convienient to pull those across - I'm sure that those of us who should use fewer words will do a good enough job of filling up space again...

Thanks much!

Thank you, Tom, for going through all the headaches of moving the site!!!

Thanks Tom,

Your work in maintaining this forum is appreciated.

I need my daily fix of info that visiting this forum provides.

Regards,
Dan
