Sorry i replaced the lower sensor and now have ordered the upper sensor...boss only half wrote down the error message, so I'm not totally sure, but the DP is getting way too hot like over 200C so I have a strong feeling that it is the upper sensor ( too Hot sensor) that should shut off the heater if it goes above 185C...
I am hoping that the detector has not been ruined by heat!?

Boss's notes say MS system Fault: 512 High Voltage problems. too hot >200C

OK. Sounds more logical but still may not be the ultimate solution. Prolonged overheating will cause burning/charring of the oil which can only be confirmed by physically disassembling the pump. The polyether based oil is quite resistant to high heat for short periods.

Hello,
I have replaced both the upper and lower heat switches, and the bottom of the Diff Pump gets hot the Software tells me to wait the 4 hours (boss doesn't really want to) so after about an hour we try to do the system verification, and although it starts, we get a Error Message 512. (HV problems).

We've opened the detector to make sure the HV lead is connected to the proper pin, and not shorting out on a metal surface.

Any ideas???

Thanks,
Mark

I don't recall exactly but I have seen this before. I would suggest you check the filament first or switch filaments if you have both installed. I will check my notes further and get back.

Okay,
So I've opened the Ion source and inspected the filaments. Both were there and one (top) was visibly worn thin in the middle. I removed them both and then swapped their positions. Now when i go to run the system verification it gives me:
MS status fail: 520
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
Mark

Any help on this would be very welcomed, at this point Agilent has done what they can for me as they don't have any info on this old system. Any online resources or offline for that matter...this MS status fault: 520 is killing me, my GCD is at this point a large expensive paperweight!

Please help if you can..

Mark

UPDATE:
Okay, using the password: PaloAlto you can get to a screen that lets you enter a error message and it will give you the translation into Human! (Thanks to Dan over at Gentech!)

Ok, so....
I've done the "to test the filaments":
4) Measure the resistance between FIL A and FIL test points. meter says: OL(out of range) no movement of "needle". i guess this means that it's less than one?
(manual say it should be less than 1 ohm)
5) Measure the resistance between FIL B and FIL test points. meter says: 0.3ohm
(manual says it should be less than 1 ohm)
6) Measure the resistance between FIL A, FIL B, or FIL test point and GROUND. meter says: OL(out of range) no movement of "needle" on all.
(manual says: resistance should be greater than 1 megohm, lower resistance indicates one of the filaments is shorted to ground)
8) Measure the DC voltage between the FIL test point and GROUND. meter says: -0.255V dc/107 k ohm
(manual says: impedance of your meter must be greater than 1 megohm, voltage should be about -70Vdc, if this voltage is not present then replace the filament cable.)
9) Measure the AC voltage between the FIL test point and the FIL B and FIL A test points. meter says: 0.006V for both.
(manual says: should be about 1V but any ac voltage can be regarded as a successful test)

Also Ive checked the MSD electronics as follows:
1) set electron multiplier to 0.
2) turn MS electronics on (MSON).
3) read MS status: says "There is no emission current"
4) set electron multiplier to above 1000V (1400V) if the fault returns the problem is probably in the Top Board or in the wiring of the vacuum manifold. fault is still present!

So what would you start with?
Top board replacement? ($1450)
or replace filament cable?
or replace filaments?

So I've ordered a new filament and a new filament cable. Hopefully this works, otherwise it looks like I'd have to try a new main board or new top board. I'll post up the results in a few days.

Thanks to Dan over at Gentech for all the amazing help!

Your test results look interesting. I have made all those and many more measurements on a working GCD top board and was able to locate them today. I would like to review/repeat my measurements to compare with yours next week and get back with you.

I was particularly interested in the password "PaloAlto" you used to get information on errors. Where is this PW entered?

I assumed this is the PW for the GCD Instrument Utilities item in the drop down menu on the Main Page. The login for this requires a log-in name and a PW. I don't know what to put in either entry. Can you reveal these two entries which give you access to the Utilities section? Is PaloAlto one of them?

Hi, have read this thread with interest... Have one of these relics here in the lab and it is actually working fine! BUT you really should wait for the diff pump to do its job before you try to use the mass spec. If I don't wait at least a couple of hours after pump down I get the same error message, No emission current, if I wait until the next morning it's all good.

@Bjorn Great to know someone else is running one of these. Also thanks for the info regarding pump down of the diff pump.

I recently had Henry Bui over at CalTech Scientific upgrade my GCD with a 5972 analyzer and his Metal Quad (parabolic) as well as his improved electron multiplier!

I will let you know what i think once i get it back and running!

Thank you for everyone's help!

@formalhaut
user: ceuser
PW: paloalto

once in "there" there is a pulldown menu I think more on the left side of the top, and when pulled down at or near the bottom is an error codes option, click it open, if you type in your error code it will tell you the meaning.

sorry my computer and machine were taken last week and i cant recall anything more specific.

kindly,
mark
