HED Supply Difficulty

espx_2, I think we are having the exact same problem as you. Our 5975C is about 2 years old and I am getting the "Difficulty with the HED supply" error, MS fault 2 as well. There was one point where we got the unknown "Tune action stopped: Undefined Symbol: v" error. I also do not know what this means.

So far I have checked all the connections on the detector, and changed my rough pump oil. Nothing seems to be working so far. I know that the turbo pump is on because I can hear it starting up when I pump down and the pump down status screen said that the turbo pump is up to speed. I also know that I have at least some sort of vacuum because I can hear the pressure release when I open the vent valve.

One weird thing that I noticed was that once I got the HED supply error, the software wouldn't let me vent properly. The only way I could vent the system was to restart Chemstation. When I did that, the MS interfaces said "All faults cleared"...unfortunately, that didn't mean that everything was working again.

I am so stumped right now. Please let me know if you figure anything out.

Vacuum gauge may be not installed in your equipement. It was an option.
Or simply out of order. Check whether gauge cable is not unpluged.

Actually, we don't have the ion gauge. Unfortunately, it is not within the package. I also have encountered this error as well:

"Tune action stopped: offset at maximum and the peaks are too large"

This sounds like you could have a problem on the Side Board that controls the quads. Also another less common problem is to have a little piece of lint on the quads, it can happen and will cause similar problems. I had a similar problem on a 5971 and when I examined the board I found a swollen and cracked resistor, once the board was replaced it worked as normal.

I'll try to have another side board for this. But that would costs us a lot, right? I hope I can just check and pinpoint the damaged resistor and be able to put another good piece on it.

There is an aspect of this thread that alarms my slightly: the very first post said that this was an instrument fresh back from a preventative maintenance visit. Was it working before the visit? If so, what happened during the visit, and who did it? Generally preventative maintenance visits are supposed to prevent the need for maintenance, not create a need for repairs!

Hi!

Yes, its working well until the time that the service was rendered by Agilent accredited service company (I cannot disclose their identity). They cleaned the ion source and the quads, installed it back and these problems occurred after the maintenance. This was something new to them and never had been experienced before. Actually, they are also in the hunt for looking some answers to our problem. Likewise, I do searches for solutions to speed-up the repair and the equipment to be put into operation again.

I talked to someone from Agilent and they said that error usually means the hed supply is dead, plain and simple. We have one on order. Hopefully it works!

Usually quad cleannings are not routine. The only time I've done them was in my earlier years, dif pumps back streamed coating the quads in pump oil. Remove and wash with dichloromethane!

Thank goodness for turbos and uninteruptable power supplies.

I just thought of something else to check, and I know from experience it can happen. Look at the quad wires inside the analyzer. They are the ones that stick out and wrap around the quads, just bare silver rigid wires. It is quite easy to bump those and move them so that they contact a grounding point with another wire or the analyzer itself. If that happens you get all kinds of weird errors, but is easy to fix by just moving the wires slightly so they are not touching anything.

I'll be checking that tomorrow when the service technicians arrive. By the way, I have ran an autotune that was from the old autotune file. It worked! But is it normal that the EMV increases to 1430 from 1200? I still, 1 have 19.40% H2O, 19.77% Nitrogen and 19.92% Oxygen even though I ave baked the system for 24 hours.

Your MSD likes 19's The ratio of N2 to O2 does't indicate air leak (or better it is not only simple air leak).

After the service team arrived, they ask me to bake the system for 24 hours. Then, I'll see tomorrow if the re-cleaning the Ion Source will restore its operations.

So far, we have replaced the HED supply and the sideboard. Neither fixed the problem. I'm going to attempt to replace the power distribution board today.
