I can't resist a quick follow-up. What you describe (a bundles of parallel sub-nano columns) sounds like a product made by a company called Nanostream. Have you ever looked into there products, or had a chance to try them?

No I have no experience of these. The idea has been around for quite a while. I suppose it has its merits and drawbacks...
