Age is important ( also for us ! ) .
Some of the parts deteriorate with age ; such as grating of the detector , driving motor of the pump and autosampler , vacuum pump of degasser etc. , and they tend to create problems over time.

Those are costly parts and are not readily available.

If the grating of the detector deteriorate , you cannot increase the energy to required level even with a new deuterium lamp.
You can absolutely see a big reference energy difference between a new and a 10 years old detector.
