OK, that feeble memory that I used HCl gas out of a normal lecture bottle, a long time ago, seems to be correct. It is really H+ and Cl- that does the corrosion, plus maybe the polarity and other physical effects of water. So it´s clear: If one is not sure whether any liquid H3O+ and Cl- can form one should not have Cl- in the system.
