Do you have the option of temporarily running your MS from a higher-purity N2 cylinder, to see if that makes a difference?

any ideas how the N2 generator could be the source of contamination. Wouldn't you need a solvent to come into contact with N2 parts to leach the plasticizers out? The only liquid is water vapor from the air.

Tedinelkgrove,
I'm afraid I have no other N2 to switch to but the one from the N2 generator. I will try to mount the trap again in the system, though. My problems seem to have started somewhere around the time it was removed, so it might be a source of at least some problems.

Tedinelkgrove,
What happened after you reinstalled the trap? Did the 214 disappear? I am having the same issue with my instrument, I have a LTQ Orbitrap XL. The 214 appeared about a year ago and we have tried everything we could think of for troubleshooting but the 214 is always present.
