Agilent 1100 pump problems

We are having problems with our Agilent 1100 binary pump. When we turn it on, it starts to go through the initialization and then after we hear the normal clicking (solenoid?) that is part of the start up procedure, it goes into error mode immediately. At this point, it hasn't tried to actually pump anything. Does any one have any suggestions about what could be wrong? Is there anything that I can try myself or does this sound like more of an internal problem that will need a service call? Thanks for any suggestions.

It could be a number of things, do you have a controller or software that can display the error message

Take off the cover, check for the cooling fans to be spinning. I believe most of the modern Agilent units immediate sense a cooling fan failure and won't initialize. In the old days, the units would run until something got hot up due to a fan failure, then shut down.

I've had this happen on modules before. I just went into a column compartment module that had a fan error message, but it turned out to be dust blocking the air grill inlet.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry that it has taken so long for me to try the suggestions.

First - there are no computer error messages. The pump never gets far enough into its initialization to connect to the computer. The computer just knows that there is no pump there.

Secondly - this morning I took the covers off the pump and then turned it on. There were no fans running. I just heard a rapid "click click click" (this is normal) and then the LEDs go to red.

As I re-read the reply about the fans I thought that I should add that this pump is about 7 years old. I'm not sure if that makes it a "modern" pump or an older model.

1100 = newer
1050 = older

If my pump is considered a newer model, does an immediate shut down indicate a fan failure? Sounds like maybe it's time to call Agilent?

Hi Karen,
All of the 1100 Agilent modules are foolproof. There is an opto-gate (infra) on the mainboard. The pump will not do the initialization with open covers.
Close this gate with a paper gobbet or the RS232 cover cap before try to initialize.
But the fan could be the reason of a failed init. anyway.
