HELP!!!

So, here's the deal:

I am an Environmental and Agricultural Lab Tech at a small lab in Wisconsin. A couple of weeks ago our technical manager passed away. I am quickly trying to learn how to run a fatty acid profile using our SRI 8610C. I have never worked with the SRI before but was able to figure out our ancient HPLC so I'm hoping to figure out the SRI. I have spent ALL DAY trying to find resources online (there has been a lot) but I am having trouble weeding through everything (can you imagine my excitement when I found this forum!?!? Yippi!). I'm trying to run AOAC 996.06. Unfortunatly our manager was not very organized and I only have a small portion of an SOP. I need help doing the procedure and with everything after turning on the SRI 8610C. I realize what a long shot this is, but my fingers are all crossed.

How much of a budget do you have for training and whatnot?

It looks like SRI does "free" training. I'd say it is a good opportunity to get some training, you just have to get there!

Since you need training to run the GC give SRI a call and see if they can send or email you a manual for the GC. They might have another customer in your area to visit if that can be arranged. GCs are very similar in most aspects. If you have trouble setting up the conditions or if your results are uncertain, look up Supelco's web site for a chromatogram using the prescribed column. Their technical service may be able to assist you also.

23362-U is the product number for the 5 inch cage for the capillary column you should be using. T408126.pdf is a free download from them that you may wish to peruse.

Unfortunatly, I won't be able to go to CA for training - although I would really, REALLY like to ! I don't really have a budget, more of a timeframe (Monday actually is when the customer would like them - they might be disappointed, but I will try my hardest). Thank you for the "good luck" - I'll need it!

I do plan on calling SRI and finding out how much support they can give - wish they gave tech support on weekends...I didn't think about asking if they had another customer in the area - I will be sure to ask! Also, I will double check the product # on the column, download the .pdf and check Supelco's website - Thank you!!

I have two that I run on a regular basis, more for fuel purposes. If you have a list of specific questions I can hopefully lay out some answers for you. Mostly what I analyze though are light gases such as CO, CO2, N2 methane, etc.
The ones I have are a duel detector FID ( with methanizor) and TCD.

All their software and manuals are online and free.

Smitty, that is what I would have given as well. The biggest pain I have had with this software is that everything is saved separately. It works but when trying to deviate a method things can get mixed up real quick. Sorry for the delayed responses. My wife is preggo and about to give at any moment so it has been touch and go for me these past couple of days.
I think they "oversimplified" the software.

I'm using an SRI 8610C also and can sympathize! My supervisor left months ago and I didn't get much training besides "inject sample, record reading" - I'm still trying to figure things out! Don't know that I can be much help, but I can try if you have any specific questions about the GC. Afraid I won't be much help on method development

By all means call SRI's tech support - I've called them enough I'm sure they're sick of me calling, lol, but they may be able to give some suggestions...

If you ever get the funding, you may want to check into ChromLab http://www.fastgcchromlab.com/ they can do on site training - costs more than SRI's training, but they will come to you. I'm hoping to arrange for training thru them soon!

The Minnesota Chromatography Forum takes place in the Twin Cities every May and there is usually a class on gas chromatography which I personally recommend. Information can be found at their web site. http://www.minnchrom.org/

I've not called SRI often, but they are very helpful when I do. You should definitely call them.

Thank you all so much for your help!! I have been on the phone A LOT with SRI tech support and they are WONDERFUL! I printed numerous pdf files off of their website - and will definatly be checking out that GC session in MN - thank you for the heads up! Unfortunatly the column that I had didn't work so I am at a standstill as I try to find another one. I don't have the split injection port so I have to stick with the wide bore columns and I've had a difficult time finding one for the test that I need.

At least I was able to get the GC up and running!
