Three Olympic athletes so far have been disqualified because their equipment tested positive for PFAS.

I'm curious about this test procedure is, how qualified the people administering it are, and how easy it is to inadvertently use something that happens to contain fluorine.

"Testing takes place in a dedicated Fluor Test Area – usually near the finish – and is conducted by the Fluor Equipment Controller. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy is used to detect fluor via one of a number of so-called Bruker Alpha II machines. Initially, an area near the front of the ski is tested as well as two spots behind the boot. "

I also wonder what the next-best wax/coating is.
via AI: ...fluorinated ski waxes exhibit a distinct FTIR spectrum characterized by strong, broad absorption bands between 1100–1300, corresponding to C-F stretching vibrations...

Not chromatography, but also quick, non-destructive, effective. Looks like a job for a small solid probe.
Thanks,
DR
