SPE and 8270C can this be done?

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with using SPE extraction techniques for 8270C compounds (i.e. acidic and basic compounds)? Is it possible to do by collecting the filtrate and then adjusting pH and refiltering (with the same or a new filter disc)? Thanks for your input!!!

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Assuming you are referring to EPA method 8270C, we can see there are over 240 componds listed as compatible. Are you analysing a sample containing them all? No, probably not.

My point is, can you be a little bit more specific on which you are trying to monitor and the sample matrix you are handling? In essence one could have answered your question with a simple "yes" but in order to help you we will obviously need to know more.

Method 8270D lists an SPE option as Method 3535 - An SPE procedure for extracting liquid samples. The method is at:

It seems to be fairly general in its applicability. However, as with all EPA procedures, first check with your internal QA dept. to see if this change is acceptable, and what validation would be required. You might even approach your EPA contacts about it.

The simple answer to your question is "yes," but it's never that simple with EPA. It's not about the science, it's all about compliance.

Thank you for your posts! I apologize for not including more detail in my first post. I am interested in ~80 of the compounds of the EPA SW 846 method 8270C (not going to list them all but there are some phenolics that are of particular concern). We have done some method development using SPE for other analyte classes but are interested in also doing PAH/SIM and 8270C by this method as well in water and soil, starting with water. I am fairly familiar with 3535a but I have not been able to find much literature on recoveries of the acid/base compounds when SPE is utilized (there has been concern expressed over this amongst staff, however soils are not pH adjusted).
