I found the sensor that MJD directed me to - its output is micro-amps per K, so woul dneed specialist kit to test it. It will ebe just as easy to replace it and see if that does the trick - now all I need is for the local suppliers to answer my e-mail !

Hi, yes that's the one.

In fact it is not easy to spot. If you are looking at the RF board when it is still attached to the instrument you will see that there is some writing on the left hand side which says "CAUTION......" , you will see it above where it is written "Quadrupole n. 3" The "caution" sign is actually pointing at the position of the sensor, more or less, but you will find it on the reverse side of the board.

I hope that helps.
The plastic cover over that end of the RF board has to come off first - then the warning about bending the sensor is visible. Although I cannot actually measure the sensor output I do find that one of the contacts has a measurable resistance to the case - when the spec says that it should be 10 power 10 ohms. I am going to replace it, there is a supplier in SA who can get me one.
