Can GC-MS detect hydrogen gas?

Discussions about GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-FTIR, and other "coupled" analytical techniques.

Hi all, good day..
I'm looking into the analysis of automobile exhaust gas focusing on xylene, methane, ethane, butane and hydrogen. Please do advise on the suitability of MSD in detecting hydrogen (or maybe there's a need to get a TCD?) and also on sampling techniques which I can utilize.
Many Thanks.

You need an MS system that detects Mass 2 eliminates all the standard lab GC/MS systems. You probably do not need MS for the analysis you require and a decent GC system with TCD and FID would be fine. Levels you want to reach etc. ??

I suggest a Carboxen 1000 micropacked column and a sampling system that includes a 6 port valve with sample loop of 1cc or more.

A µTCD equiped GC using nitrogen carrier will give you the best response. You should be able to see very low levels, even sub-ppm amounts.

best wishes,

Rod
