I am planning to use GC with NPD for phosphorus containing compound. Which solvents are recommended to dissolve compounds? Can they contain "O", "Cl", "N"?

						Push,
Don't recommend CL. Do recommend turning off power for solvent elution. Really recommend you get a hold of Paul Patterson at DET (det-gc dot com)
The GURU of that detector.
Best regards,
AICMM

Definitely don't want a nitrogen containing solvent like pyridine since the detector is sensitive to nitrogen, that would give a massive solvent peak.
I know hexane and MTBE are used when doing NP pesticides by the EPA methods though.

For that matter you might want to avoid a GC column with nitrogen in the stationary phase like 1701, 624 (cyanopropyl side chains). Otherwise any non nitrogen solvent is probably fine.
I like
acetone (one of my favorites it dissolves almost anything)
toluene (for higher boilers also has broad solubility)
heptane
diethyl ether (I try to avoid due to risk of peroxide formation)
ethyl acetate
methanol
ethanol
isopropanol
