Inline and Pre-column Filtration in HPLC

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

Hello All,

I am working on designing new filtration systems for conventional HPLC. We are working on both an inline filter (filtration prior to injection) and a pre-column filter (post-injection).

I have spoken with some of the OEM's regarding this, but I would like to get some real user feedback on what is currently missing from filters available on the market today.

1) What is your biggest headache with the current filters out there?
2) What micron rating would you like to see?
3) How important is quick change to you?
4) Do you clean and reuse filter frits or prefer to throw them out?
5) What materials do you prefer for the filter frit itself? PEEK, 316LSS, something else?
6) Would having a sensor that told you the percentage clogged be of interest?

Any feedback you can provide would be much appreciated!
Hello

Below you can see my personal opinion about your questions

1) What is your biggest headache with the current filters out there?

They need to be changed often...and are easy to be blocked

2) What micron rating would you like to see?

2um at least

3) How important is quick change to you?

quite important...two spanners and less than 3-5 minutes

4) Do you clean and reuse filter frits or prefer to throw them out?

Sometimes sonication can help but they are not very expensive so better to replace them

5) What materials do you prefer for the filter frit itself? PEEK, 316LSS, something else?

SS is the best so far...for UPLC for sure

6) Would having a sensor that told you the percentage clogged be of interest?

It is pointless a bit...if it is clogged (doesn't matter if 2% or 75%) it needs to be replaced anyway
But as I mentioned it is my personal opinion :)
