I don't think the general recommendation should be to surf the Internet or to contact suppliers.

Most important must be to study the chemical structure of the analyte and the compounds that need to be separated from it.
If that does not give a clue an old fashioned textbook is probably needed to get an idea on what direction to go. Based on this the scientific literature provides an enormous source of knowledge and rough applications. Then it is time to scrutinize suppliers websites and catalogs to find the suitable alternative for the particular application.
