I am very familiar with GC, but new to Chemstation. I have version A.03.02 and would like to connect a 5890A GC to a computer by way of HPIB Boards. (1925760015, 60020 and B9482335) I do not have the manual to do this. Also do not have operation manual for Chemstation. Would be willing to pay someone for copies.

Thanks Larry lrosetti@bellsouth.net

On the Agilent website you can download all kinds of manuals and handbooks (after registration). Only about your version I'm not sure.

I have searched that site thoroughly with no luck. Seems it does not go back that far. Thanks for your effort.

I'm sorry.. you could still try to have a look at a newer manual (maybe only little has changed) or call the technical hotline. They are usually very helpful, maybe they can mail you the right manual or just tell you what to do. HTH

I have A.03 manuals; however, I don't think that will be any help in your situation. I believe the 5890A is too old to be connected to a Chemstation, you'd need a series II; the main board on the right side is way different. I've looked into this before; to be sure, ask Alpha Omega, an Agilent partner, that does similar stuff like this. Agilent telephone help line will not help with unsupported instruments, but maybe speak directly to your local Agilent service person.

I have a 5890 II also. How can I get a copy of your manuals? Willing to buy. Thanks very very much.

lrosetti - For A.03.02 you'll need a computer running Win 3.x (we formerly used 486 and Pentium I CPUs). From what I know, you'll need an interface HPIB board which mounts to the rear panel of the 5890II and attaches to the GC board with a ribbon cable. That HPIB interface attaches to the HPIB board in the CPU using HPIB cable. If you have an autosampler, its control box will also attach using a second HPIB cable. I just checked, I have G2070-90100 "Understanding your Chemstation" A.03 and G2170-90000 "Installing your Chemstation" A.03 but that's for 2D HPLC, but almost exactly the same. Installation of the software is straightforward; there's really nothing in the manuals about which interface boards are needed, or where they go. As moino stated, the newer software versions and manuals are VERY similar; the main differences are that A.03 doesn't have the graphics of the later versions, and that the newer versions integrate the sequence recalibration events into the Sequence Table, where in A.03 that is saved as part of the Method (for example, "replace" and "average" are designated by numbers). I am not allowed by my company to "sell" stuff like this, but I can answer your questions.

Thanks. I have all the boards and cables and will give it a try. Do you know if I can use Win 95?

With Win95 we use A.06.03, Agilent gave us free (really) copies of A.06.03 in late 1999 for all our systems for Y2K compliance. I doubt that this offer would still hold though. It turns out that A.03 still ran fine. A.03 was never meant to be used with Win95, but personally, don't know if that would work. We have at least three systems still running Win95/A.06.03.

Consumer Products Guy,

Thanks very much. I'll give it a try and let you know.
