what could be the best mixture for calibrating hs-gc apart from 0.4% ethanol in water.

To beg the question, the best calibration is an internal std.

A proper calibration is to use multi-levels of whatever analyte you are measuring from the matrix you are measuring it.

You should perform limit of detection experiments, reproducibility experiments, and linearity experiments concerning your calibrations.
