Repairing 5890 TCDs

I've searched around, can't seem to find anyone that sells a refurb kit for HP 5890 TCDs. Am I doomed to buy a new one, or is there someone that'll send me a new wire + any special equipment to install it?

Looking on Google, there is a company called Gow-Mac that says they repair / refurbish many TCDs. Worth contacting them, also let us know how you get on.
We may be ditching an operating 5890 with FID and TCD within a month to make room for a new 7890.

What exactly do you need? I must say that the TCD part has not been used for many years, and more than a decade ago I disconnected the two leads to the TCD detector.
The Gow-Mac supplies the TCD used on PE GCs, but Agilent's design is proprietary and was difficult to repair. I believe replacement was the only option.

I was hoping to snag a board on ebay. Non-working detectors come up on ebay now and again and I had hoped to refurbish one, get it back in service. I'd like to be able to do headspace samples on tissue cultures, but it's all hobby work so the budget isn't there. (Plus it's tough to convince the wife to get another GC when you have three already.) As gauged by prices on ebay you could probably get $1000-4000 for a working 5890 with FID/TCD; parting it out, you might be able to get more or less, with the hassle of selling pieces.

I looked at prices for a refurb/new TCD (it's tough to tell- the company says they won't refurb TCDs claiming not knowing the history renders them unsafe to work on), and- heck, they run more than a used 5890.
The usual problem with the Agilent is the detector becoming clogged. The hot wire TCD used on PE and others fail to wire burnout most commonly.

A pHID from Valco would work as a TCD with the sensitivity of an FID. Or an Argon ionization detector (AIC), email AICMM on this forum, might work for your needs.
