The Center for Analytical Chemistry is recruiting to fill an Environmental Scientist position in the Food Safety laboratory. The Food Safety lab monitors for pesticides in targeted fruits and vegetable crops and other matrices as directed by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. This position requires a strong knowledge of chemistry and analytical instrumentation. The Center for Analytical Chemistry’s staff primarily consists of Environmental Scientists, Staff Environmental Scientists, Senior Environmental Scientists, and Scientific Aides.

Summary of the Position:

Under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist, the incumbent will perform routine chemical analysis including sample extraction using validated multi-residue methods; confirm reported findings according to method procedures; prepare reports and review data. Additional duties include developing and validating new methods and maintaining optimum operation of analytical instruments in the laboratory. The incumbent will also assist supervisor in various aspects of laboratory operation.

The laboratory is equipped with gas and liquid chromatographs (GC and LC) interfaced with triple stage quadrupole and ion trap mass spectrometers (MS/MS). Besides these sophisticated scientific instruments, the laboratory has automated extraction apparatus that is computer driven, highly sensitive and complex. Therefore, the operator for these instruments must be a college graduate, well trained, highly qualified, and experienced.

Desirable qualifications:

The applicant must have completed a minimum of 20 semester units or 30-quarter units of college level chemistry course work; must possess knowledge of and practical experience with advanced instrumentation, good computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and laboratory information management system database. GC/MS or LC/MS experience preferred.
