Webinar! Non-targeted Screening Workflows for the Analysis of Microcystins by LC/QTOF

Harmful algae blooms are becoming larger and more frequent around the world. Microcystins are a class of cyanotoxins produced by some algae that pose analytical difficulties in LC/MS methods. Well over 100 variants have been identified in the scientific literature, but only a dozen or so are commercially available. Analysis by triple quadrupole MS will only detect those compounds that are specifically targeted in the method, and may miss either structural isomers or previously unknown toxins.

LC/QTOF is an excellent tool that provides many advantages over LC/QQQ for this type of analysis. It offers accurate mass measurements, both MS and MS/MS capabilities in the same run, and mass resolution capable of identifying different product ions that can’t be resolved on unit mass instruments. Various workflows on the Agilent 6500-series QTOFs can quickly identify and quantitate known microcystins, as well as help tentatively identify non-targeted compounds and give estimates of their concentrations.
