Short Introduction to the HPLC-Environmental Assessment
Tool “HPLC-EAT”

HPLC-EAT is High Performance Liquid Chromatography
Environmental Assessment Tool. It is the first devoted tool for quantitatively
profiling the Greenness of the HPLC methods. Three important criteria,
Environmental, Health, and Safety, are included in the current assessment. The
tool calculates the amount of each solvent involved in the analytical method in
grams, which is then multiplied by a factor representing the solvent
Environmental, Health and Safety risks. These factors are calculated based on
the EHS assessment method proposed by Koller et al., 2000. Finally a score can
be given for almost any HPLC method which is then used for comparison to greener
alternative methods (Gaber et al., 2011).
