Hello Legacy Varian and Galaxie CDS users,

I am reaching out with some great news for all trusted Varian GC and Galaxie software users.

A company called Scion Instruments bought the IP rights to the Varian GC and Galaxie CDS.

They have been working tirelessly to develop next generation SOFTWARE and HARDWARE for the Varian systems and Galaxie CDS.

Galaxie CDS is now called COMPASS CDS; which is compatible with the latest Microsoft Windows. Scion instruments is providing big discounts for upgrades to latest version from Galaxie. All they need is your Galaxie licence number for you to enjoy a discounted upgrade.

All your existing instruments, data and method files are 100% compatible with Compass CDS. So you will be able to see all old data after the upgrade without any issues.

Varian 3800, 3900, 430 and 450 are now called Scion 436 and 456 respectively. Scion retains all engineering drawings of legacy Varian systems and they can provide an upgrade to a like for like instrument working from serial numbers of legacy systems– so that you don’t have to deal with migrating methods from one instrument to the other and worry about repeatability of results.

Troubleshooting: Scion has been providing free technical advice and support to Legacy Varian customers – through there technical support teams based in Livingston, Scotland.

Good evening Sunny.
Thank you for the news.
Do you perhaps know if the software that has been re-written will also work for the Varian 3400 CX GC?
Kind regards
Dave

Hi,
The newest version of Compass is not compatible with the 3400. Older versions are compatible but they are no longer for sale via Scion (legacy of Varian). If you have any further questions please just email me at:

Hi,

Just inherited a Varian 450-GC and Galaxie original software. The Galaxie serial number was passed on but the Varian-GC driver serial number not. Can anybody help please?

Thanks

Hi,

I am now struggling to make a connection between 450-GC and Galaxie configuration manager. I have re-installed Galaxie (as a standalone) on a freshly installed Windows XP-SP2 computer. There is no antivirus software installed in this computer and the windows firewall has been disabled.

Since a static IP is used in the GC and in the computer I have tried to make a connection via “systems” in Galaxie configuration manager. The Galaxie 450-GC drivers are being identified and even the system finds the static IP assigned to the GC automatically. When activation communication is clicked it says “communication parameters activated” but does not say “setup received from instrument” suggesting communication is not complete. The GC and the computer is directly connected using a cross over cable.

Hope you all could provide some suggestion to sort this out please.

In my case the manual was very detailed (CP4900). There are two extra buttons to receive and send configuration from/to the GC. It did not happen automatically after Activating Communication. To receive, the button is at the bottom left corner. Both buttons have a very distinct icon. Also, everything worked with a normal UTP cable, actually I had some issues with the crossover cables. This probably depends on the ethernet card.

Bottom line, have you checked the manual thoroughly? I am a newbie but was able to complete all steps using the manual and many trial-errors

Hi All,

Is there any eaiest way , we can import the methods used in Galaxie CDS to Compass CDS.

We installed Compass CDS for our Varian GC in a new PC and our old methods are used in Galaxie CDS , i looking the way to import all the methods can be directly imported or we need to develop all methods manually in new Compass CDS . Kindly clarify if anyone is used it

HI,

Many thanks for your response. I switched the cross over cable to the normal UTP. Still no luck. For some reason the buttons you are referring to does not exist. Galaxie version I have installed is 1.10. I am using a static IP on both the GC and the computer. The computer has Windows XP SP2 (freshly installed, with no firewall or antivirus software). So I do not use BOOTP. Instead I have tried to make a connection via "Systems". Did you also do the same? Also if you do not mind can you let me know the version of Galaxie you are using and the manual you followed?

Many thanks

It is probably easier to share the manuals directly [https://www.dropbox.com/sh/626qsz1mpj6i0nl/AAB_lwCbRYAediPUqWlKqaLma?dl=0]. I have Galaxie v1.9 on a Windows XP SP2 and followed the instructions to the letter. A note, you need to install two keys: for the Galaxie Software and the GC driver.

Many thanks again. We are still having no luck. I am just wondering whether the issue is related to the GC firmware not being compatible with driver installed. Would like to know your opinion. Also do you know where I could obtain a firmware upgrade for the Varian 450-GC please? Many thanks.
