5890 on G1701DA

For a long time, I've been running my simpler 5890s(FID, TCD, etc) from MSD Chemstation. Usually they're parked next to an MSD system anyway(or sometimes even an FID on the same instrument) and I prefer MSD Chemstation to standard Chemstation.

Right now, I have a 6890/5973 on HPIB(at least for a few more weeks...) and a 5890 FID running off the same computer running G1701BA.

I know that G1701DA officially supports HPIB 6890s/5973s. I know there's also a company out there that sells a patch to run 5971s/5972s on DA.

I have G1701DA here, and I'd really like to upgrade this computer to get things like long file names and just the newer less buggy software.

I'm wondering, though, if anyone has worked out a patch to run a 5890(no MSD) from DA.

Otherwise, can Chemstation A.03.08(which I also have) "coexist" with G1701DA on the same computer? If nothing else, at least that would let me run the 5890 and 6890/5973 from the same computer, even if I couldn't run them simultaneously.
I was running a HPIB 6890 FID and a 5890/5971 MS from two copies of the MS version G1701AA A.03.00 running on Win98. Later, I upgraded the 6890 system with a network card and a bios upgrade and am now running the 6890 FID with the mass spec version of D.01.02.16 running on WinXP Pro.

I don't think you can find a way to run the ISA GPIB controller for the 5890 series II or a 5971/5972 on an OS higher than Win98. If you can... Let me know!

Also its my gut feeling you would need another PC. I doubt the two versions of Chemstation would play well together on the same PC.

I find that Win98 runs A.03.00 just fine and is more stable than Win95. No constant need to reboot due to memory loss.

I'm running an ISA card in Win2K, but it's an 82341c and not an 82335.

When I bought the 82341c, I bought it because I'd been trying to use an 82335 and couldn't get anywhere. I was buying out of pocket and at the time 82341s were selling for like $20 on Ebay. Last I checked they'd gone up a lot-almost to 82350.

Geoff said off-handedly to me at one point that he thought an 82335 might work if you plugged "hp82341" in the configuration tool like to you do with the 82350. I might try that at some point since I have a couple of 82335s in my office.
82335 uses memory region and works only on Win9x
82341 works both Win9x and on XP and any later NT-kernel OS

honestly, the 82335 works also on Linux, but to make GC run you need UniChrom.

5972s will work with either 5890s or 6890s. You need a different transfer line since the heater/sensor plug is different on the 6890. In addition, the ones meant for 6890s have an extra "shroud" on the front to fill the gap. They actually are branded on the front as "6890 Series Mass Selective Detector", not unlike how some some 18593B towers are branded "6890 Series Autosampler" on the front(may not have that wording exactly correct) rather than "7673."

The 5972 gets along fine with G1701BA without the patch. I think I talked to you in particular a lot about the 5971 I "converted" to a 5972-it was essentially plug and play with BA. The only change I had to make, funny enough, was running a sync cable from the 5890 to the G1512A. It would make an injection but not start the run. It makes sense that it should be there, but I didn't need one when I was using a G1512A with Chemstation "C"(the pre AA/BA etc version), nor have I seen one used when using an 18594B.

The DA patch for the 5890/5971 is done by a company whose name escapes me and who I can't find in a quick Google search. They supply a complete computer and IIRC "lock" the install to that computer, and do charge a decent amount for it(understandably). That same company will also fit metal quads to a 5971/5972.
G1701BA that runs on Windows 2000 is the last version of CHemstation MSD that runs the 5890GC. I use it to control my 5890-FID. I use G1701BA to run the instrument then usb drive it to my office computer with G1701EA E02.02 for analysis. It can analyze MSD, FID, FPD, even DAD data.
