Hello everyone,

I am having some troubles using the EMPOWER 3 custom fields and I am not sure if what I am trying to do is possible or not in this software.

I will explain the case the best I can.
I work with 3 samples, I weigh 3 replicates of each sample and I inject 3 times each replicate

Label____Inj___Average/RSD%___Final Average/RSD%
U0101____3
U0102____3
U0103____3______U01
U0201____3
U0202____3
U0203____3______U02
U0301____3
U0302____3
U0303____3______U03_______________U

I create the 3 custom fields "Interinjection average" for U0101, U0102 and U0103 with this syntax:

U0101.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)-->Name: U0101
U0102.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)-->Name: U0102
U0103.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)-->Name: U0103

I know that I coud use an easier syntax for that: "SAME.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)" and avoid the creation of 3 different custom fields, but after that I want to do the average of U0101+U0102+U0103

So for that, I create "interreplicate average" custom field with this syntax: (U0101.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)+U0102.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)+U0103.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT))/3

The other possible option is to use this: "U01%.%..AVERAGE(AMOUNT)"
But with that syntax,it will take the 9 injection values instead of taking the 3 average values.

I know that the result will be the same in this case (Average), but when talking about RSD%, the result is not the same if we take the 9 injection values or the 3 average values.

So my question is:

Is it possible to create a custom field that does the average or RSD% of other created custom fields???
Which syntax and connectors do I need to use in the syntax between them (,./"[])?

For example :

AVE(U0101,U0102,U0103)
AVE(U01,U02,U03)
RSD%(U0101,U0102,U0103)
RSD%(U01,U02,U03)

If it is not possible....is there any other way to perform this calculations in EMPOWER3?

Thank you very much in advance

Best Regards

Can you use a mix of labels and sunmary tables in a report merhod to achieve this? So filter by label U01 etc for a single sample with 3 injections then filter by between U01 and U03 etc for another table and add some functions like Mean and Std Dev etc per table?
Hello EmpowersBane,

First of all Thank you for replying.

I have done what you say and with that, I get to have the average and %RSD of the 3 injections of U0101/U0102/U0103.
But if I prepare a summary table with U01 it makes the average and %RSD of the 9 injections and what I need is the average and %RSD of the 3 averages.

U0101
U0101 { U0101 AVERAGE1 U0101%RSD
U0101

U0102
U0102 { U0102 AVERAGE2 U0102%RSD {U01 AVERAGE U01 %RSD
U0102

U0103
U0103 { U0103 AVERAGE3 U0103%RSD
U0103

Do you Know if there is any custom field syntax that helps me with that??

Thank you very much in advance.
I understand what you mean. You should be able to do this by adding the 3 CFs and dividing by 3. So if your first CF for U0101 is called U1_average (or whatever) then code a peak, real, calculated CF and the formula is (U1_Average+U2_Average+U3_Average)/3. Don't code it as you did in your post ie (U0101.%..AVE(Amount)+U0202...etc). Just reference the 3 x CFs as I stated and I cant see why it wouldn't work.

A bit obvious too but average is denoted as AVE in the custom field formula and not AVERAGE. Plus with an AVE in the formula you need to add "Summarize Custom Fields" from the Function column as the last line in the sample set. Hope this helps.

Edit: to get the %RSD of the 3 averages, then create a CF adding up the 3 x average CFs (so a CF coded as U1_Average+Average_U2+Average_U3 then a second CF called %RSD(Average_CF_Addition) and that should work.
With the average I have no problem. The syntax you propose is the same I was using.
But in the case of %RSD, if I create a CF that adds U1_Average+Average_U2+Average_U3 it will give a unique value, and after that the %RSD of that value is 0.000

U1_Average= 2.5
U2_Average=2.6
U3_Average=2.4

2.5+2.6+2.4=7.5
%RSD(7.5)= 0.000
