I am currently trying to identify unknown products in neat glycerol and neat ethylene glycol samples.

I am looking for light molecular weight compounds such as polar aldehydes (formaldehyde) and as well as heavier compounds such as various length oligomers.

I have managed to run liquid sampling GCMS of neat ethylene glycol with a Zebron ZB-5 column which has worked successfully. (Phase: 5%-Diphenyl-95%-dimethylpolysiloxane copolymer)

However, when I run a liquid glycerol sample, I see a sharp rise in the baseline after the glycerol peak. (Showing significant bleed)

Is it because it is a viscosity issue? Or would it be that the column is not compatible with glycerol as a solvent? (And is destroying the stationary phase)

Is there a better column, method or technique of analysing my samples for unknown compounds?
