Varian 1200 connection question

Hello community,
My lab has inherited a Varian CP-3800 with a 1200 MS. Since it's hard to get support for this instrument, I was hoping someone in this community might be able to help out. The instrument had been shut down three years ago with some tuning problems (which I hope to solve in the future), but for now I fail to establish a connection between the PC and the MS ("MS hardware not connected" in the Configuration >Options menu of MS WS).
For now, I'd was wondering if anyone here knows if the serial cable connection between the MS and computer should be a straight or crossed-over cable?
